Cycling to Garganta del Diablo – A Ride Through Ancient Canyons

Tips for Cycling to Garganta del Diablo

  • Check the weather: While the Atacama Desert is the driest desert in the world, occasional strong winds or rare rain can impact your ride. Always check the forecast before setting out.
  • Wear appropriate clothing: The desert can be scorching during the day and chilly in the shade. Use sunscreen, wear a hat or helmet with sun protection, and bring layers for temperature changes.
  • Bring water and snacks: Staying hydrated is essential in the dry desert air. Carry enough water for the ride (at least 2 liters) and pack energy snacks for the route.
  • Protect your gear: The sandy and dusty environment can affect your bike. Make sure your chain is lubricated, and consider carrying a basic repair kit for emergencies.
  • Pace yourself: While the ride is relatively flat, the dry air and altitude can make cycling more challenging. Take breaks in the shade to rest and acclimatize.
  • Secure your bike: When leaving your bike at the base of the viewpoint, use the lock provided by the rental shop for extra security. While it’s a safe area, locking your bike is always a good practice.
  • Respect your limits: The short hike to the viewpoint can be tiring, especially if you’re not used to the altitude. Take it slow and enjoy the journey.

In October 2024, during our vacation in Chile, we found ourselves in the magical region of San Pedro de Atacama. This area is a gateway to some of the most surreal landscapes on Earth. While we planned to visit some distant attractions like the El Tatio Geysers and the Salar de Tara with local tour companies, we decided to explore nearby gems like Garganta del Diablo and Valle de la Muerte on bicycles, allowing us to soak in the landscapes at our own pace.

Preparation and Setting Off

Having learned from past experiences with subpar rental bikes in Paracas, Peru, we spent the afternoon before our ride researching bike rental shops. Fortunately, we found a shop that offered well-maintained bikes at a reasonable price. The owner, who was extremely helpful, not only reserved our bikes for the next morning but also provided us with a detailed map of the route (even though we had offline GPS for backup).
Early the next morning, we picked up our bikes and set out. The journey began with a short ride out of town, navigating a few roadworks on the main highway before reaching the entrance to the Valle de Catarpe. Here, we paid the entry fee of 3,000 Chilean pesos in cash, registered our names, and noted our entry time. The entrance also had basic facilities like restrooms, water, and snacks—a great spot to make any last-minute preparations.

Entering the Park

The route into the park immediately immersed us in the stunning natural beauty of the Atacama Desert. The landscape gradually transformed as we pedaled deeper into the valley, with wide-open spaces giving way to narrow canyons and towering rock formations. The unique geography of the area is nothing short of breathtaking, with every turn revealing new wonders.

The Garganta del Diablo Experience

The ride through Garganta del Diablo is undoubtedly the highlight of this adventure. This narrow canyon, carved over millennia by natural forces, offers an otherworldly experience as you pedal between its towering walls. The sense of scale and isolation is awe-inspiring, and for a moment, you feel completely disconnected from the outside world. Along the way, we met fellow cyclists from around the world, sharing stories and exchanging help with photos. The camaraderie added a unique touch to the experience, reminding us of the universal appeal of adventure.

Reaching the Mirador

The final stretch of the journey brought us to the base of a viewpoint. Here, we left our bikes and began a short but steep hike to the top. The ascent was manageable, and we took our time, enjoying the process. The reward? A jaw-dropping panoramic view of the Atacama Desert, including iconic volcanoes like Licancabur and Lascar (the latter of which we climbed the following day—more on that here).

For me, this moment was truly special. Standing atop the viewpoint, I experienced something I had never felt before: absolute silence. The complete absence of sound was almost surreal and left a lasting impression on me.

The Thrill of the Ride Back

Descending from the mirador, we hopped back on our bikes for the return journey to San Pedro. While the ride to the park had been slow and contemplative, filled with photo stops and awe at the scenery, the way back was an exhilarating rush. I pedaled fast, embracing the adrenaline of navigating the narrow canyons, the wind rushing past me as I raced through this otherworldly landscape.
