In May 2023, I finally embarked on the long-awaited Peruvian adventure, exploring its stunning landscapes and rich culture.
Our journey took us through Lima, the dunes of Huacachina, the coastal beauty of Paracas, the historic streets of Arequipa, and the serene waters of Lake Titicaca in Puno. Finally, we arrived in Cusco—the gateway to some of Peru’s most iconic adventures. Among them was the awe-inspiring Rainbow Mountain trek, a one-day hike that had been on my bucket list for years.
Booking the trek in Cusco was straightforward, with numerous agencies offering similar services at competitive prices. After a bit of comparison, we secured our spot and prepared for the climb to one of the world’s most vibrant landscapes.
Our day started at 4:40 a.m. when the agency’s van picked us up for the two-hour drive to Cusipata, a quaint village south of Cusco. Along the way, the first light of day revealed rolling valleys, terraced fields, and herds of llamas and alpacas grazing peacefully under the shadow of snow-capped peaks.
In Cusipata, we stopped for a hearty breakfast to fuel up for the challenge ahead. From there, we continued to Chillca, where the real adventure began. The trail started gently, winding through stunning terrain where colorful mountains met icy streams and expansive skies.

The trek to Rainbow Mountain is not for the faint-hearted. I wasn’t in better shape than during my previous adventures, and the altitude—peaking at 5,200 meters—was a formidable challenge.
About halfway up, my partner decided to hire a local horse to carry her the rest of the way. While walking beside her, I made the mistake of jogging to film a lighthearted video. It was a moment of overconfidence that quickly drained my energy, and the remaining climb became a test of sheer willpower.
Every step felt heavier as the air thinned, and the vibrant landscape seemed to taunt me with its serene beauty. But the encouragement of fellow hikers descending from the summit kept me moving forward. Step by step, I pushed through, reminding myself that the reward at the top would make it all worthwhile.

When I finally reached the summit, the view was beyond anything I could have imagined. The vibrant, mineral-rich layers of Rainbow Mountain stretched out like an artist’s palette, framed by snow-covered peaks and a dramatic sky.
To my delight, my partner joined me shortly after, proving that determination can overcome any obstacle. Together, we soaked in the surreal beauty, took photos, and celebrated this shared achievement.

Descending the trail was a breeze compared to the climb, though the narrow dirt roads we traveled on the way back to Cusco added a thrilling edge to the journey. The van maneuvered along steep cliffs with breathtaking—and nerve-wracking—views of the valleys below.
The trek taught me a valuable lesson: never underestimate the power of persistence, even when the odds feel insurmountable. Rainbow Mountain challenged me physically and mentally but rewarded me with an experience I’ll cherish forever.
